Join us for an evening of exploration and discussion with some of the most innovative and unusual educational institutions working with young adults in our country today. Microcolleges are a growing movement of place-based, meaning-centered programs for college-aged students with small enrollments ranging from 5 to 45 students and holistic curricula that embrace farm work, wilderness skills, arts, and tools for self-governance alongside traditional academic subjects. Thoreau College, based in Viroqua, is a leader in this emerging field and this January will be hosting a summit of several other microcolleges from around the country. The summit will include representatives from Deep Springs College, a highly regarded 2-year microcollege founded in 1917 and based on a working cattle ranch in eastern California, as well as from programs drawing inspiration from Deep Springs and its founder LL Nunn based in Alaska, Massachusetts, New York, Alabama, and Wisconsin.
Local teachers, counselors, students, parents, and community members are warmly invited to join us on Friday, January 16 for an evening of presentations from each of the participating organizations. This event will be free and will take place from 6:30-8:30 at the Commons, located at 401 E Jefferson St. in Viroqua. Please email admin@thoreaucollege.org or call 608-632-3829 if you have questions.
