Join us for the Organic Metaphor in Politics, a six-week Winter Program course exploring how political thinkers and philosophers have used metaphors from the natural world, and how these metaphors shape how we view both ourselves and our environment. The academic intensive course will include seminar-style classes, taught by guest scholar Philippe Mesly, as well as craft workshops and a weeklong winter expedition in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve.

Find out more information, and check out the application at the link in our bio and at thoreaucollege.org/winter-program. Applications for the program are due December 1.

Microcollege Podcast Episode 43: Ben Samuels and Max Feigelson - Current Students at Deep Springs College @freepillars

For Episode 43 of the podcast, we spoke with two current students at Deep Springs College, which is one of the key sources of inspiration for our work here at Thoreau College. Deep Springs is the original microcollege, operating since 1917 on a cattle range in a stunning and severe remote high desert valley along the California/Nevada border, just north of Death Valley. For over 100 years, groups of about 25 students have lived, studied, and labored together in this unique community for two-year periods of time. Listen in to hear about how these two Brooklyn natives found themselves moving irrigation lines and pruning fruit trees on a remote desert ranch and what it is like to facilitate and enforce a decision to almost completely ban cell phones and internet connections in a community of self-governing young adults.

To tune in, follow the link in our bio or search for "Microcollege" on your favorite podcast platform.

Among other roles, Sam is the student Chair of the DS Communications Committee (ComCom), which is in charge of recruitment and promotions. In this role, he has helped to spearhead an exciting collaborative initiative called the League of Nunnian Schools, which includes Deep Springs and Thoreau College, as well as our peers at @outer.coast and @tidelinesinstitute in Alaska, @gullislandinstitute in Massachusetts, and @tellurideassoc based in Ithaca, New York & Ann Arbor, Michigan. Happy Friday from Thoreau College! Our Fall Gap Semester students are on their way home from the fall expedition in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. Ordinarily, though, Fridays here are centered on the practice of self-governance. "Community" is one of the Five Pillars of Thoreau College and for us a big part of community is collaborative decision making, stewardship, and mutual support. Students, Fellows, and Staff have lunch together every weekday at the Thoreau campus, but on Friday we also come together for our Friday Meeting, where we share reflections on the week, give each other feedback and observations on how we are doing, and discuss practical matters of all kinds. And above all, we take time to practice gratitude and to express specific appreciations for each other and for people, places, and experiences that have enriched our lives in the past week. Each week, students also have their own Student Body meeting, in which they govern many aspects of their lives together in the Thoreau College residences. Students also participate in meetings of the Thoreau Board of Trustees and other governance bodies.

At Thoreau College, we believe that students in our programs are not consumers of a product, but partners in a collaborative project of stewardship, discovery, and mutual personal development. As we work together on matters ranging from the mundane to the sublime, all participants practice skills of empathy, communication, conflict resolution, foresight, and shared responsibility that make us all better neighbors, citizens, and initiative takers.

A big shout out to Deep Springs College @freepillars for modeling Self-Governance of over 100 years!

If you want to join our circle of community self-governance next fall, applications for the 2024 Thoreau College Fall Gap Semester are now open - see the link in the bio or go to www.thoreaucollege.org/metamorphosis

This past Saturday, October 14, the Thoreau College Gap Semester students participated in the triumphant return of the Viroqua Harvest Parade #viroquaharvestparade. After a 3 year hiatus, the parade was reborn for the 11th edition, with a great turnout from the community and a fantastical display of papier mache costumes, stiltwalkers, giant puppets, and community performers and musicians of all ages. The Thoreauvians had been hard at work on their costumes during arts classes during the past six weeks and did a great job for embodying Earth, Air, Water, and Fire.

One of the truly unique and powerful aspects of the Thoreau College Gap Semester and other programs is the opportunity for immersion in our vibrant and welcoming rural community. With just 4,500 people, Viroqua, Wisconsin is truly a gem of a town - rich in artists, educators, healers, regenerative farmers, foodies, and others devoted to the cultivation of the community, culture, and the Earth. For Thoreau College, these people are our extended faculty and this is our campus. We are so grateful for all of the welcoming neighbors and collaborators we have here, and especially the amazing team who brought the Harvest Parade back to life!

If you want to march in the Viroqua Harvest Parade next fall, applications for the 2024 Thoreau College Fall Gap Semester are now open - see the link in the bio or go to www.thoreaucollege.org/metamorphosis

This week marks the midpoint of the 2023 Thoreau College Fall Gap Semester. The students are off for a weeklong wilderness expedition in the spectacular Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. While we await the stories and inspirations they will bring back with them, we will be taking some time here to share some pictures and stories from the action-packed first six weeks of the semester. Early autumn is such a rich and beautiful time here in the Driftless Region and we and our students have really been able to dig in deeply across all five pillars of the Thoreau College curriculum - Academics, Labor, Art, Nature, and Community. Stay tuned and see what we have been up to!

And also, along with the @gapyearassociation and the rest of the Gap Year community, we are celebrating October as #gapyearexplorationmonth !

Applications for the 2024 Thoreau College Fall Gap Semester are now open - we look forward to seeing you here in Wisconsin a year from now!

We are still basking in the afterglow of the first week of the semester, which we spent on expedition on the broad and dreamy lower Wisconsin River. For 5 days and over 50 miles, we paddled under the capable leadership of Expedition Coordinator @justysgrenier, camping on sandbars, marveling at the abundant birdlife, and sharing songs and stories under the full moon. Along the way we historical sites like Tower Hill State Park andvthe Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center at Taliesin. We also learned about this beautiful stretch of well preserved riverway from some of its local guardians, including Timm Zumm of Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway and Mark Cupp, who introduced us to the stunning sacred effigy mound complex at Frank’s Hill near Muscoda.

All in all, a great way to kick off the semester!
