We are still basking in the afterglow of the first week of the semester, which we spent on expedition on the broad and dreamy lower Wisconsin River. For 5 days and over 50 miles, we paddled under the capable leadership of Expedition Coordinator @justysgrenier, camping on sandbars, marveling at the abundant birdlife, and sharing songs and stories under the full moon. Along the way we historical sites like Tower Hill State Park andvthe Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center at Taliesin. We also learned about this beautiful stretch of well preserved riverway from some of its local guardians, including Timm Zumm of Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway and Mark Cupp, who introduced us to the stunning sacred effigy mound complex at Frank’s Hill near Muscoda.

All in all, a great way to kick off the semester!

Hailing from California, Massachusetts, Brazil, Connecticut, Illinois, and Wisconsin, these intrepid souls arrived in late August for an autumn of homesteading, folk arts, expeditions, singing, food, community celebrations, and academic readings and discussions exploring the theme “Habitat for the Human Spirit.” We have been enjoying getting to know them over the past couple of days and you can too - follow along here for a sampling of our journey together from summer into winter!

These week on the podcast we hear about a fascinating new holistic education initiative which brings teenagers and adults into the sacred mountains of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula to the region around the ancient St Catherine’s monastery. Working closely with Bedouin elders of that region, Muhammad Bassyouny, Ahmed Yehia, and Alaa Ahmed have crafted an immersive experience of the mountains and desert, combined qi gong and martial arts and discussions of readings drawn from a broad range of traditions. Join us to learn more about this remarkable program, which has beefed influenced by Deep Springs College, the Danish folk high schools, the African Leadership Academy, the Island School semester program in the Bahamas, and Ahmed’s experiences as a student teacher at the Youth Initiative High School here in Wisconsin.

To celebrate, we sat down in the studios of @wdrt91.9fm with two of our illustious alumni, Maurielle McGarvey @4l0ys1us and Brandon Ipiña @killing_camaraderie, who both came to Viroqua from Houston, TX during the pandemic year of 2020-2021. Join us for a passionate conversation about what drew them here, what it is like to be a student in a microcollege, and how the experience has shaped their lives since. Brandon went on to attend Deep Springs College @freepillars and Maurielle has been helping to shape and promote the wider microcollege movement as an intern with Springboard organization, while continuing to pursue her passion for playwriting. “What is the rich life for me?”: Finding a compass for my life at Thoreau College

“My experience here has been full of things that have enriched my life. I also feel that I have been able to go beyond the limitations that I had unconsciously imposed on myself and become more spiritually free than before.

I learned a lot about how people can support each other from life here. It took me a while to get used to living with the community and the other five members since the language and culture is different to me. We are constantly influencing and influenced by our surroundings. This was especially evident when the five of us were constantly learning and working together. The vibes I created and the words I said influenced other members around me. Therefore, I became more aware of my actions and gestures from the way I express myself in daily life to what I buy and from whom, etc. Once I began to think about this, I became more sensitive to changes around me. I began to observe the changes in emotion and tried to be conscious as much as possible.“
